Do you know what the jewel in Lanzarote’s crown is? Let us tell you a story. The story of César Manrique. Born in Arrecife in 1919, he was a multidisciplinary artist who forever reoriented the island’s landscape. His influences, from his first moments, flow between the abstract intermingled with the landscapes of Lanzarote. After returning from a period of training in New York, Manrique established his residence on his native island where he proposed a series of artistic projects to give a new face to many of the representative landscapes.

His aesthetic ideology was finally consummated in the interventions carried out in, for example, Jameos del Agua, Mirador del Río or Jardín de Cactus. Su ideario estético se terminó consumando en las intervenciones realizadas en, por ejemplo, Jameos del Agua, Mirador del Río o Jardín de Cactus. The amazing dialogue between nature and the hand of man through architecture gives these enclaves a truly astonishing international projection.

Jameos del Agua

One of the most recognized interventions of César Manrique is Jameos del Agua. It is a structure created to contemplate the effect of the eruption of the Corona Volcano approximately three thousand years ago. It is formed by three jameos, the Grande, the Chico and the Cazuela, behind the stage of the auditorium. Its inauguration took place in 1968 and represents the maximum expression of Manrique’s idea of dialogue between the environment and nature with human intervention.

The Natural Auditorium has a capacity for 550 people. Its extraordinary acoustics make it one of the most impressive venues on the island to celebrate any type of MICE event if you are looking for spectacular and absolutely unique surroundings. On the other hand, the aquatic habitat under Jameos del Agua is home to more than seventy endemic species of great value and scientific interest, including the endangered blind crab. A crystalline lagoon of 7 meters deep that has been formed by the filtration of seawater, facilitated by the situation below sea level.

Cueva de los Verdes (Cave of the Greens)

The bowels of Lanzarote are crossed by formations that make those who enter them feel as if they were traveling through a landscape of science fiction or mythology. The Cueva de los Verdes (Cave of the Greens) is eight kilometers deep and forms one of the most incredible natural spectacles in the world. Would you like to culminate an unforgettable incentive trip by strolling through the amber light of its walls? Can you imagine listening to a classical music concert inside? We tell you the details you should know about the Cueva de los Verdes.

A series of tunnels and nooks and crannies with interior lagoons run through kilometers of galleries. Here you will find the Túnel de la Atlántida, one of the most important volcanic tunnels in the world, which forms the underwater part of the Cueva de los Verdes. This place is one of the most visited of the island and its legend goes back to the XVI and XVII centuries when, according to the story, it was used as a refuge for the population before the arrival of the Barbary pirates from North Africa. The fascination that the Cueva de los Verdes awakens around the world has made it one of the most visited natural monuments on the island. The intervention of the Lanzarote artist Jesús Soto, a later collaborator of Manrique, turned this place into a sanctuary of singular beauty.

Monument to the Peasant

César Manrique had the idea of paying tribute to the island’s farmers in a place as inspiring as it is open. Located at a crossroads, the lyric of this place evokes the typical Lanzarote architecture and, inside, visitors can learn about local crafts, traditions and the way of life of Lanzarote’s farmers.

This place is presided over by the Monument to Fertility, which is 15 meters high and houses a subway grotto inside. This is one of the most demanded options, due to its capacity, for large groups. It is currently one of the most recognized symbols of Lanzarote and inside you can also taste the most typical dishes of the island: caldo de millo, sancocho canario, pulpito con mojo verde… In addition, you can organize guided tours of the surroundings, where you can find some of the samples of the local culture, with which to work in workshops that give to know the life of a very special place. Walking along the path or through the Plaza de los Artesanos are options to complete a unique visit to one of the most important monuments of Lanzarote.
