A place whose landscape is dominated by the Tindaya Mountain, 400 meters above sea level. An almost sacred site with a very peculiar history. Did you know that the Basque sculptor Eduardo Chillida designed a project to turn Tindaya into a monumental work? The author of such recognizable works in Spain as the Peine de los Vientos or the Elogio del Horizonte chose this place to create a work, in his words, “useful for all mankind”. However, his project to empty the mountain inside and create a space that, despite being approved in 1995, ended up being discarded in 2019 by the Cabildo of Fuerteventura. Tindaya Mountain is today one of the most visited enclaves of the island and a place of silence, rest and spectacular scenery.
Would you like to walk around the historical capital of Fuerteventura? In Betancuria, a village founded around 1404 by Jean de Bethencourt, one could see the prosperity of an island besieged by pirates and which based its economy on rain-fed cereals. Declared a historical site in 1979, Betancuria also has an exceptional sample of religious architecture (Franciscan convent of San Buenaventura, churches of Santa Maria and La Concepcion or the hermitages of Santa Ines and Nuestra Señora de la Peña) as well as the museums of Sacred Art, Archaeological and Ethnographic Fuerteventura.
A movie set
Fuerteventura has been one of the most used scenarios in recent years by major film studios to shoot some of the most blockbuster movies of recent years. Filmmakers such as Ridley Scott (Exodus: Gods and Kings), Robert Zemeckis (Allies), Ron Howard (Solo: A Star Wars Story), Terry Gilliam (The Man Who Killed Don Quixote) or Álex de la Iglesia (30 Coins) have chosen the island as a set to shoot some sequences of these films.
In addition, if you are looking for a unique place in the world, we recommend you to go to the beach of El Hierro, where you will find miniature rock formations that will surprise you… On the beach of Bajo de la Burra, some curious “pebbles”, which are nothing more than calcareous algae, in the shape of popcorn. These stones lived in the sea and were washed ashore by the waves. When they arrive, the effect of the elements around them causes them to slowly erode and acquire this peculiar shape.
