Vegueta, the historical heart

Vegueta is the foundational district of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. This neighborhood, declared a Historic-Artistic Site in 1973, is a living testimony to the rich history of the island’s capital. Through its cobblestone streets and historic buildings, the traveler is transported back to the 15th century, to the times of the conquest of the island. The neighborhood owes its name to the fertile plain that extended around the Royal fortification of Las Palmas. Initially it was called Vega de Santa Ana and with the passing of time, Vegueta acquired the importance that made it the administrative center of the city. Currently, and thanks to the marked tourist character of the neighborhood, it is the best preserved historic quarter of the Canary Islands.

In Vegueta and its surroundings you can find MICE spaces such as Gabinete Literario, the Casa de Colón or the Pérez Galdós Theater. You can check the availability of these spaces exclusively at [email protected]

Christopher Columbus, on the road to paradise

The connection between the sailor and the city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria dates back to 1492. In the same year that the voyage to the Americas took place, Columbus stopped in the city to repair the rudder of one of his three ships: La Pinta. Built at the end of the 15th century, today it houses a library specializing in the history of America with more than 25,000 volumes, a university center and rooms for MICE events.

In short, a building with more than 500 years of history that today is part of the cultural identity of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Europe’s relations with the Americas can be traced through its facilities.

Benito Pérez Galdós, the beloved son

Born in Las Palmas on May 10, 1843, the writer, politician, chronicler and playwright Benito Pérez Galdós ended up being one of the greatest representatives of the realist movement of 19th century literature in Spain. Some of his works are today classics of universal literature. Who has not heard of Fortunata y Jacinta, Misericordia or the National Episodes?

Many experts have described Pérez Galdós as the greatest literary genius after Miguel de Cervantes. Although he wrote some of his most celebrated works in Madrid, the soul of the Canary Islands vibrated through his veins. And he knew how to transfer this to his writings. In the peninsular capital he met with his friends from the islands and visited Gran Canaria until, around 1865, various family problems or memories impossible to overcome, made him never set foot on the island again. He died in 1920, at his home in Hilarión Eslava, Madrid. His eyes gradually grew dimmer. The light of his literature continues to illuminate those who approach it.
